Why you ended up with a .webp file
Sites serve WebP because it is roughly 25-35% smaller than an equivalent JPG at similar quality, which makes pages load faster. When you right-click and save, you get whatever the site served, not the original JPG or PNG.
Browsers, phones and current versions of Windows and macOS all display WebP fine. The friction comes from older desktop software, print shops, some content management systems, and upload forms that whitelist file extensions.
JPG or PNG — which should you pick?
- Choose JPG for photographs and anything destined for an upload form. It is the most widely accepted format and keeps file sizes small.
- Choose PNG for logos, screenshots, diagrams and anything with sharp edges or flat colour, where JPG artefacts show up badly.
- Choose PNG if the WebP has transparency you need to keep — JPG cannot store an alpha channel and will fill it with a solid colour.
What happens to quality
Most WebP files on the web are lossy, so some detail was already discarded before you downloaded them. Converting to JPG applies a second round of lossy compression on top; at a high quality setting the difference is invisible, but repeatedly re-saving the same image will slowly soften it.
Converting to PNG avoids the second loss entirely because PNG is lossless. The trade-off is size: a PNG of a photograph can be several times larger than the WebP you started with.
