How to extract specific pages from a PDF

Extract or delete?

They produce the same result from opposite directions. Extract when you want a handful of pages out of many; delete when you want to remove a handful and keep the rest. Whichever list is shorter is the one to type.

Page range syntax

• 3 — a single page.
• 3-7 — an inclusive run of pages.
• 1,4,9-12 — mix single pages and ranges, separated by commas.
• Order is preserved as it appears in the document; to change the order, rearrange the pages afterwards.

Common reasons to extract

• Sending a landlord only the pages of a bank statement that show the rent payments.
• Pulling one signed page out of a long contract for filing.
• Taking a single chapter from a manual to share with a colleague.
• Separating one invoice from a monthly batch scan.

Check what else the pages reveal

Pages carry more than their visible content: headers, footers, account numbers running down a margin and reference codes all travel with them. Before sending extracted pages to anyone outside your organisation, read them as the recipient will — top to bottom, edge to edge.

If a page contains something that must not be shared, extracting the rest and leaving that page out is far safer than covering it over in a viewer, where the underlying text usually remains selectable.
