Why your CV is 8 MB
A CV typed in a word processor and exported to PDF is typically 100-300 KB. If yours is many megabytes, something image-based got in: a scanned signature at photo resolution, a photograph of a certificate, a graphical header, or a design template with embedded artwork.
Scanned certificates are the usual culprit. Phone cameras and scanner apps default to a resolution far higher than a recruiter's screen will ever show.
What recruiters actually receive
- Most applicant tracking systems display documents in a web viewer, not at print resolution — extra detail is discarded before a human sees it.
- Many systems also extract the text for keyword matching, so keeping text as real text rather than a picture of text genuinely helps you.
- A single well-ordered PDF beats five attachments when the form allows only one upload.
Order of operations
Export the CV itself from your word processor rather than scanning a printout — that alone usually solves the size problem and keeps the text machine-readable. Then merge in scanned certificates, and compress only if the total is still over the limit.
Compress last, not first. Compressing each certificate and then merging gives a worse result than merging and compressing once.
